Using the Dutch Reach is straightforward – simply open your car door with the hand that is furthest from the door. e.g. as a driver uses your left hand, as a passenger use your right hand.. It will force you to turn your body more, so you’re much more likely to notice a cyclist, motorcyclist or pedestrian out of the corner of your eye so you don’t hit them with the door. It’s really just down to habit – and it’s a habit we should be trying to adopt. Putting it into the Highway Code is planned soon. I teach the Dutch Reach to my pupils as part of delivering all the most up-to-date techniques on my driving lessons. Using the ‘Dutch Reach’ is a great way for drivers and passengers to reduce the risk to those on two wheels.”
