Front:
All white apart from indicators which are amber. Exception – some cars have amber sidelights (like bigger vehicles have down the sides)
The white lights are:
Daylight Running Lights (not on older cars, EU law since 2007, although some older cars have them) so other drivers can see you more easily. (Helpful particularly when overcast or in light rain)
Sidelights (some cars have a left or right parking light optional setting when parked and the engine is off)
Headlights:
Dipped
Main Beam (also called Full or High beam)
White fog lights are an optional extra that some higher spec models come with. They are fitted in or below the front bumper to lights the road under the fog.
Rear:
All red apart from indicators and reverse light(s)
Red tail lights to be seen from behind come on when sidelights or headlights are switched on.
One or two extra bright red rear fog light(s) are fitted, only to be used when visibility has reduced to under 100 metres.
One or two white reverse light(s) are the only white lights on the back of vehicles.
Front, back and sides have indicators which are amber and flash. The side ones are over the front wheel or in the back of the door mirrors. When the triangular hazard warning button is pressed all the indicators both sides flash.
