To start driving a car as a learner, you need to be least 17 yrs old, have a provisional driving licence and be covered by the correct insurance. (My driving instructor insurance covers learners under my supervision to drive my car). The car you learn in must display ‘L’ plates.
You can apply for a provisional driving licence before you are 17 so you’re ready to start driving lessons and take the theory test anytime from your 17th birthday onwards (apply for a provisional anytime after you’re 15 years and 9 months old).
You must be supervised when you’re learning to drive a car. This can be by a driving instructor or someone else who meets the rules, for example family or friends.
You can drive at any time, day and night and have passengers too.
You can only drive on motorways if you’re with an approved driving instructor in a car is fitted with dual controls (extra pedals for the instructor).
